Oak Bay clinic robbed by man with a knife

An Oak Bay business owner robbed by a man with a knife Tuesday night escaped unharmed and police are now canvassing other stores in the area for video surveillance.
Herbal Path, a traditional Chinese medicine clinic at 2012 Oak Bay Ave., was robbed at about 6 p.m.
Such a brazen robbery is “rare,” said Oak Bay Police Chief Mark Fisher. “I think we’ve had two or three in the last two years that I’m aware of.” The area is well-lit and busy with pedestrian and car traffic.
A man 35 to 40 years old went into the store and asked for a product from the female business owner, the only person in the store just before closing, said Fisher.
When she turned her back to retrieve it, the man crept up behind her and pulled a knife. The robber did not touch with the knife or grab her .
The man demanded cash and she took an undisclosed amount from the cash register. She gave it to the robber and he ran away.
“She complied with the demand and wasn’t hurt,” Fisher said.
A police tracking dog followed a scent to a parking lot behind the store but could not locate the suspect.
Police will not say whether Herbal Path is equipped with video cameras but investigators canvassed neighbouring stores for such footage Tuesday night and will continue today when stores reopen, Fisher said.
The suspect is described as a clean-shaven white man with short brown hair, a slim build and standing approximately five foot eight. He is believed to have been wearing a dark blue baseball cap and polyester bomber-style jacket, and light-coloured — possibly white or grey — pants.
Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or the Oak Bay Police Department.
