A 42-year-old man is dead after being crushed by a steel plate on a bulk carrier ship off the coast of Vancouver Island Friday evening.
Air rescue crews were called to the Pinchat, a deep sea vessel with a Bermuda flag bound for Singapore, around 3 p.m. The ship was 130 nautical miles west of Bamfield.
The injured man was crushed by a steel plate and had a major gash on his abdomen, said Coast Guard officer Troy Haddock. He was being flown to Victoria General Hospital when he died en route. His body was taken to St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox.
The cause of the incident or personal details about the man who died are not known at this time.
