B.C. Ferries has added sailings to its Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay schedule in order to accommodate travellers heading to Vancouver for concerts by two of the biggest names in music.

Concerts by Paul McCartney on Sunday at B.C. Place and Bruce Springsteen on Monday at Rogers Arena are expected to result in heavy passenger traffic. In an effort to cushion the crunch, extra vessels and hourly sailings have been added.

"Our main concern is making sure people plan in advance," said Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs for B.C. Ferries.

On the day of McCartney's concert, four vessels - up from the regular three - will provide hourly service from mid-morning to early evening on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route. Three ferries - up from two - will cover the same stretch on the day of Springsteen's concert.

"We want people to avoid the disappointment of getting to the terminal and being late for the concert," Marshall said. "If you don't have a reservation, travel early."

B.C. Ferries does not keep statistics on the number of travellers heading to the mainland, "but there is a good indication it will be full," Marshall said.

According to B.C. Ferries data, reservations for travel between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on both Sunday and Monday were still available as of Wednesday afternoon.

No additional sailings or vessels have been added to the Duke Point and Departure Bay routes servicing Vancouver from Nanaimo.

A small number of tickets are still available for both concerts, says concert promoter Live Nation Canada. More than 65,000 people will be in attendance during the two-day span.
