More people cleared in Buziak murder
Sep 23 2010
Saanich police are taking what they are calling "the extraordinary step" of ruling out more suspects in the realtor's death.
Investigators say the airing of a U.S. television program has lead to rumour, innuendo and finger-pointing at Lindsay's former boyfriend Jason Zailo and his family.
So today Saanich Police said the Zailo family has been cleared.
The department hastily called a media briefing to make the announcement.
"Shirley Zailo, Ryan Zailo and Jason Zailo... we would like to state unequivocally that no member of the Zailo family is presently considered a person of interest or a suspect in any way in this investigation." Said Sgt. Dean Jantzen.
Jason and his mother, realtor Shirley Zailo appeared in a "Dateline NBC" program on the Buziak investigation, but Shirley's other son who works with her, did not.
Saanich police gave dateline unprecedented access to their investigation with evidence never seen before the program aired last Friday.
Investigators met with all three Zailos in the past four days and as late as Wednesday. The department is going out of its way to clear the Zailos saying they are not considered suspects or persons of interest.
"This has been done through a variety of investigative means and techniques" says Jantzen "Which I'm not going to reveal as many of these same techniques get used in different investigations."
Sources familiar with the investigation tell /A\ News among those tools; the entire Zailo family agreed to undergo polygraph tests.
Saanich police say they willingly agreed to make the public statement at the request of the Zailo family following fallout from the dateline program.
Jantzen says it was important to clear the air in the sense that some fingers have been pointed as a result of this program. "We were involved in the program" says Jantzen and that the department participated fully in the production of it.
Matt MacDuff is another former boyfriend of Lindsay Buziak. He too appeared in the dateline program and maintains he is innocent.
The department says the Buziak tip line is still ringing and it will be taking further investigative steps this week.
