A 19-year-old Victoria man has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing a war memorial in Pioneer Square less than a week before Remembrance Day.
Victoria police Const. Mike Russell said the man was arrested early Saturday with an empty spray can and paint on his hands.
Police say he defaced a memorial erected in honour of Royal Canadian Air Force members who served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. A headstone in memory of four young children who died from 1864 to 1865 was also damaged.
The man, who is being charged with mischief, was released on a promise to appear in court on Dec. 4.
"We're particularly disturbed by the senseless crime, especially so close to Remembrance Day," Russell said. "People go to these memorials every day to pay their respects."
