Saanich police arrest woman in smoking Subaru after driver flees scene of collision

Police followed the smoke of a smashed-up Subaru Sunday evening and eventually arrested a 44-year-old Saanich woman for impaired driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Saanich police became involved when they received a call about a hit-and-run near the intersection of Wilkinson Road and West Saanich Road. They were told a Subaru had rear-ended another vehicle and sped off immediately after.
More reports came in of a Subaru with significant damage speeding near the intersection of Royal Oak Drive and Pipeline Road, said Sgt. Chris Horsley. Police were able to spot the driver because her car was smoking considerably.
She refused to pull over at first, Horsley said, but eventually stopped her vehicle. Police found a plastic cup with wine in it and a half-bottle of wine on the passenger seat.
The woman was taken to hospital to make sure she had no injuries and was later brought to the Saanich detachment and charged.
The incident was one of several traffic accidents to which Saanich police responded Sunday. Few details were available Sunday evening, but Horsley said winter conditions and minor accidents kept officers busy throughout the day.
