Taxi driver suspected of smoking pot on duty

A taxi driver, who is believed to be smoking marijuana while on duty, had his car impounded after Saanich police pulled him over for speeding on the Pat Bay Highway Saturday.
The 38-year-old man was on duty and seen driving at more than 120 kilometres an hour where the speed limit is 80 km/h. An officer who pulled over the driver detected a strong odour of marijuana when he approached the car.
The officer discovered a small bag of marijuana in the vehicle and other evidence that the driver had been smoking marijuana, said acting Sgt. Brad Brajcich. Police impounded the vehicle and arrested the driver, who received a 24-hour licence prohibition because he was impaired and a $368 excessive speeding ticket.
"We believe he was impaired from the drugs," Brajcich said. No one else was in the vehicle.
"It's not very common we come across this," Brajcich said.
