Predicted rains over the next few weeks may impact a contained oil spill in Swan Creek.
Although the accidental leak from a residential tank has been contained and as much oil collected as possible, there is still oil in plant material in the upstream portions of Swan Creek being held above and below the water surface.
Heavy rain may cause the trapped residual oil to move downstream, creating an oily sheen on top of the water and the smell of fuel, says Adriane Pollard, Saanich’s manager of environmental services.
Some of that oil will be trapped and removed at a temporary dam built by Saanich. However, the municipality is advising people and pets to stay away from the streams.
Home heating fuel accidentally leaked from a private property upstream on the Colquitz River, and was propelled downstream by heavy rains Nov. 25.
