Police blotter: Victoria drug sweep, knifepoint robbery, downtown stabbing and busker assault

Dec 20 2011

A Victoria police crackdown on street-level drug dealers has resulted in trafficking charges against 14 people.

Operation "November Reign" focused on drug trafficking in the 900 block of Pandora Avenue, where illicit drugs are being bought and sold continuously, Const. Mike Russell said.

Undercover officers bought cocaine and heroin over a three-day period, Nov. 15-18.

Police have arrested 12 people. Two warrants remain outstanding, Russell said.

"This undercover project targeting prolific drug traffickers is just one small aspect of the strategy to decrease crime in the Pandora area," said Staff Sgt. Dave Bown of the focused-enforcement team.

"Combined with our high-visibility patrols and close working relationship with downtown service providers, we're committed to making the area safe for everyone."

The focused-enforcement team conducts drug crackdowns two or three times a year. In May, 22 people were arrested in operation "Cinco de Mayo."

Victoria police are looking for three men who surrounded a 27-year-old Colwood man and robbed him at knifepoint Thursday near Rainbow Park in Esquimalt.

The victim was walking in the 200 block of Robert Street when three men jumped in front of him and blocked his path, police said. One man took out a large knife and demanded the victim's backpack.

The backpack was ripped from his shoulders and all three ran from the area.

They are described as being in their mid-20s and all about six feet tall. They were wearing black tuques.

Victoria police are also searching for a man who robbed a 19-year-old Saanich man Sunday about 11 p.m. near Tillicum and Craigflower roads. The man was waiting at a bus stop with a friend when another man struck up a conversation with them.

The robber then threatened violence unless the victim surrendered his iPod.

The thief grabbed the iPod and ran away. He is described as 18 to 23 years old, with brown eyes and a slim build. He was clean-shaven and wearing a brown hoodie and grey sweat pants.

Police found a victim, a 25-year-old Victoria man, in the View Towers apartment building parking lot.

He had been stabbed a number of times in the head and hands, but would not co-operate with police. The victim was treated by B.C. Ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital.

Police do not know where the man was stabbed or by whom.

Anyone with information is asked to call Victoria police at 250-996-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Victoria police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a man they believe assaulted Darth Fiddler, the violinplaying busker.

Randy McKenna, who has become a Victoria staple by playing his violin dressed as Star Wars villain Darth Vader in the Inner Harbour, was tackled as he played at the corner of Government and Wharf streets about 7 p.m. on June 11.

McKenna suffered minor injuries. His violin was damaged.

Police said there was no warning or provocation for the attack.

Police released surveillance footage from the Robbins parkade on Broughton Street that shows a man wearing a red T-shirt and jeans fleeing witnesses.

The attack resulted in an outpouring of support for McKenna. Larsen Music gave him a new $500 violin.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of 23 year-old Shane Michael Dailey of Langford. Anyone with information is asked to call Victoria Det. Lori Beauvais at 250-995-7256.
