Signal crossing installed by Johnson Street bridge
Dec 20 2011
The City of Victoria has installed a new signal crossing for cyclists and pedestrians using the Johnston Street Bridge.
The button-activated crossing is at the junction of Esquimalt and Harbour roads. It will allow people to cross Esquimalt Road and use the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.
Cyclists will be able to use the signal crossing to get to the eastbound traffic lane. The crossing replaces the route off Habour Road over the rail overpass.
This will become a construction area.
The detour will remain in place until the completion of the new bridge in 2016. In the meantime, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should use caution until they are familiar with the new crossing.
City spokeswoman Bridget Frewer said a warning sign has been posted before the S-curve to slow westbound traffic "because it is a bit of a blind corner."
The signal crossing was activated Monday morning. Staff began monitoring traffic and reported no significant traffic backups, Frewer said.
Staff will continue to monitor the crossing in the coming weeks and make adjustments to the signal as needed.
