Fires force out three families
Dec 27 2011
Three Island families were forced out of their homes by fires on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Flames broke out at a home on the 800 block of Dufferin Street in Nanaimo around 10 a.m. Sunday as the family was sitting down for Christmas breakfast, said Capt. Dan Rogers of the Nanaimo Fire Rescue Department.
The six occupants and two cats made it out of the house before about 20 firefighters arrived. The fire was largely confined to the rear exterior of and attic, and the family is staying with friends while fire inspectors investigate the cause.
On Christmas Eve, two families lost their homes after fire raged through a duplex in Gold River.
The two couples and their young children were able to escape uninjured but lost everything, officials said.
More than $1,300 has been raised to help the families get back on their feet since neighbours set up a trust fund at: helpthejacksandwilsons. blogspot.com.
