About six per cent of Nanaimo residents, 5,085 people, used the services of a food bank this Christmas, a one per cent jump from last year.
The figure is double the national average and three times the provincial average, according to a survey by Food Banks Canada.
The Salvation Army and Loaves and Fishes food bank combined Hamperville campaign, which puts together food packages, said it had a record year for the number of people requiring the service.
