Sailboat fire in Oak Bay sends owner to hospital
Dec 29 2011
An anchored sailboat is burning near Oak Bay Marina this morning. The owner was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
The concrete-hulled vessel was reported on fire just after midnight Thursday. The lone man aboard was removed by a nearby boater, said Oak Bay Fire Capt. Ken Gill.
The location of the boat in the bay, north of Oak Bay marina, falls under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Coast Guard. The coast guard has decided to let the fire burn itself out, said Gill.
Oak Bay firefighters are also monitoring the blaze. The boat is not close to any other vessels, Gill said.
“At this point the boat is standalone and there’s no other exposure,” Gill said.
However, the vessel is “unsafe and unstable” and therefore impossible to board at this time, Gill said.
